How Scam Calls Pretend to Be from Your Bank

The scam

“Your card will be blocked today.” “Someone is trying to withdraw money.” The person calling sounds like a bank employee. They may even know your name or part of your account number. Then they ask for an OTP, card details or access to your phone. Knowing a few details about you does not make the caller genuine.

Warning signs

•  You are asked to share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password.

•  The caller wants you to install a screen-sharing or remote-access app.

•  You are not given time to contact the bank yourself.

•  You receive a strange link to “verify” your account.

Stop and verify

Hang up and call your bank using its official app, website or the number on your card. Never give your OTP, PIN, CVV or banking password to someone on a call, even if the number looks familiar.

If you have already acted

•  Stop sharing details and end any screen-sharing session.

•  Contact the bank’s fraud team and ask what needs to be blocked.

•  Change exposed passwords using a trusted device.

•  Keep the call details and messages. If any money was taken, call 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
