How Digital Arrest Scams Use Fear to Demand Money

The scam

Someone calls claiming to be a police officer, customs official or investigator. They say your name has come up in a criminal case and order you to stay on a video call. Then they demand money for “verification”, “bail” or to “clear your name”. The uniform, official-looking papers and video background may all be fake.

Warning signs

•  You are told you are under “digital arrest”.

•  You are ordered to keep your camera on and tell nobody.

•  You are asked to transfer money to prove your innocence.

•  You are stopped from contacting your family, lawyer or local police.

Stop and verify

There is no lawful “digital arrest” process in which you must remain on a video call and pay money. Disconnect. If you are still worried, contact your local police or the department concerned through its official contact details.

If you have already acted

•  End the call and do not make another payment.

•  If you transferred money, tell your bank immediately.

•  Save the messages, phone numbers, screenshots and transaction details.

•  Call 1930 promptly and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
