Before You Invest Only to Save Tax

The Decision

A tax benefit can make a product tempting. Before putting money in, check whether you qualify and whether the commitment makes sense for your needs.

Check Before You Proceed

  • Confirm your tax regime and the deduction available to you. Many familiar investment deductions don't apply under the new regime.

  • Check how much of the deduction limit you've already used. Existing contributions may leave little or no extra tax benefit from another purchase.

  • Read risks, fees and how long money stays locked in. Leaving early can mean charges or losing a tax benefit if conditions aren't met.

  • Work out the actual reduction in your tax bill. The amount you invest isn't the amount you save in tax; income and withdrawals may be taxed too.

  • Check that regular bills, premiums and emergencies still fit your budget. Include any payments the product requires in future years.

Common Traps

Buying in a rush near the deadline. Taking an agent's tax claim at face value. Signing up for years of payments to claim a deduction this year.

Pause If...

You can't claim the deduction, payments stretch your budget, the lock-in clashes with your goal, or the tax benefit is all you understand about the product.

Never Ignore

Saving tax doesn't remove investment risk, charges or future payment obligations. You still need to be comfortable with the product's full terms.

Final Reminder

Know what you're signing up for beyond this year's tax saving.
