The Decision
Health insurance can help with hospital bills, but it won't necessarily pay everything. Before choosing cover, check what you may still need to pay yourself.
Check Before You Proceed
-
Compare the cover amount with treatment costs near you. If family members share the cover, consider what happens if more than one needs treatment.
-
Check room and treatment limits, and any deductible you pay before insurance applies. Some policies reduce other eligible payments if you choose a room above the limit.
-
Read waiting periods for existing conditions and specified treatments. Check the wording for health issues you or your family already have.
-
Confirm nearby cashless hospitals and the claim process. Cashless approval doesn't mean every item on the hospital bill is covered.
-
Check co-payment, your share of eligible costs, exclusions and renewal premiums. Give accurate medical details and read the completed application yourself.
Common Traps
Choosing only the lowest premium. Assuming cover starts for every illness on day one. Letting someone answer health questions without checking, or trusting verbal promises over written terms.
Pause If...
Important treatment appears excluded, terms aren't clear, or someone suggests hiding medical information. Get the answers before committing.
Never Ignore
Incomplete or incorrect health answers can affect claims. Keep a copy of what you disclose and ask for written clarification of unclear questions.
Final Reminder
Know where the cover stops and your own payment begins.
