Income Tax Return (ITR)

An Income Tax Return (ITR) is a form used to report income, taxes paid, deductions, and other required financial information to India’s Income Tax Department.

Definition

An Income Tax Return, commonly called an ITR, is a statement filed with the Income Tax Department showing a taxpayer’s income and tax-related information for a financial year.

Depending on the taxpayer, an ITR may include income from:

  • Salary or pension
  • House property
  • Business or profession
  • Capital gains
  • Interest and other sources

The return may also report:

  • TDS (Tax Deducted at Source)
  • Advance tax or self-assessment tax paid
  • Eligible deductions and exemptions
  • Certain assets, liabilities, or foreign income where disclosure rules apply
  • Any refund or additional tax payable

India uses different ITR forms for different types of taxpayers and sources of income. The correct form depends on factors such as whether the taxpayer is an individual, business owner, company, or other entity, and the types of income earned.

After filing, taxpayers generally also need to verify the return through an accepted method for the filing process to be completed.

Importantly, filing an ITR does not necessarily mean that additional tax is payable. A person may have already paid the required tax through TDS or advance tax and could even be entitled to a tax refund.

Practical Example

Filing an ITR After TDS Has Already Been Deducted

Meera works for a company in Mumbai and also earns interest from bank deposits.

During the year, her employer deducts TDS from her salary, and some tax is also deducted from her interest income.

After the financial year ends, Meera calculates her total income, considers the deductions available to her, and checks the tax already paid against her final tax liability.

She then files the appropriate Income Tax Return.

Suppose her final tax liability is ₹72,000 but ₹78,000 has already been deducted as TDS.

After her return is processed, Meera may be eligible for a ₹6,000 refund, subject to the Income Tax Department’s assessment and applicable rules.

History & Context

1961

Income-tax Act Establishes the Modern Legal Framework

The Income-tax Act, 1961 created the main statutory framework for income taxation in India. It includes provisions requiring eligible taxpayers to furnish returns of income and sets out the broader rules governing tax assessment and compliance.
2000s

Electronic Filing of Income Tax Returns Expands

India progressively introduced and expanded electronic filing of income tax returns, reducing dependence on paper-based submissions. Over time, e-filing became the standard method for most taxpayers.
Today

ITR Filing Is Largely Digital

Income Tax Returns are now generally filed through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing system. Different ITR forms apply to different taxpayers, and filing requirements, forms, deadlines, deductions, and tax rules can change from year to year through legislation and government notifications.
