Income Tax

Income Tax is a tax charged on the income earned by individuals and businesses, with the amount usually depending on how much taxable income they earn.

Definition

Income Tax is a direct tax imposed by a government on income earned during a financial period.

Income may come from sources such as:

  • Salary
  • Business or professional income
  • Interest
  • Rent
  • Capital gains
  • Other taxable sources

The amount of tax payable depends on the taxable income, applicable tax rates, deductions, exemptions, and the rules of the country concerned.

In India, income tax is governed mainly by the Income-tax Act, 1961 and administered by the Income Tax Department under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

Individuals may be taxed under different tax slabs, where higher portions of income can be taxed at higher rates.

Taxpayers may also need to:

  • File an Income Tax Return (ITR)
  • Pay advance tax, where applicable
  • Account for TDS (Tax Deducted at Source)
  • Claim eligible deductions or exemptions

Income tax rules can change through the Union Budget and amendments to tax law, so current rates and conditions should always be checked before filing.

Practical Example

Paying Income Tax in India

Rahul earns income from his salary and fixed-deposit interest during the financial year.

His employer deducts TDS from his salary, while the bank also deducts tax on interest where applicable.

At the end of the year, Rahul calculates his total taxable income after considering the deductions and exemptions available to him.

He then files his Income Tax Return and compares the tax already paid through TDS with his final tax liability.

If too much tax was deducted, he may receive a refund. If too little was paid, he may need to pay the remaining amount.
