Credit Score

A Credit Score is a numerical measure of a borrower’s creditworthiness, based mainly on their past borrowing and repayment behaviour.

Definition

A Credit Score helps lenders estimate how likely a borrower is to repay money on time.

It is usually calculated using information from a person’s credit history, such as:

  • Loan repayment record
  • Credit card payment history
  • Amount of debt outstanding
  • Credit utilisation
  • Number and type of credit accounts
  • Recent loan or credit applications
  • Length of credit history

In India, credit scores are provided by credit information companies such as TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, and CRIF High Mark.

A commonly used score range is 300 to 900, although scoring models can differ between bureaus.

Generally, a higher score suggests a stronger repayment history and may improve the chances of:

  • Loan approval
  • Credit card approval
  • Lower interest rates
  • Higher credit limits
  • Better borrowing terms

However, a Credit Score is not the only factor lenders consider.

They may also look at:

  • Income
  • Employment stability
  • Existing EMIs
  • Loan amount
  • Type of loan
  • Property or collateral value

A good score can be damaged by late payments, defaults, very high credit utilisation, or too many credit applications in a short period.

Regularly checking the credit report can also help identify errors or unfamiliar accounts.

Practical Example

Same Loan, Different Borrowing Terms

Rohan and Amit both apply for a personal loan of ₹5 lakh.

Rohan has a strong repayment record, low credit-card utilisation, and a high Credit Score.

Amit has several missed payments and a much lower score.

The lender may approve Rohan more easily and offer him a lower interest rate.

Amit may face a higher rate, a lower approved amount, or even rejection.

This shows why a Credit Score can affect both access to credit and the cost of borrowing.
