Annual Information Statement (AIS)

Annual Information Statement (AIS) is a detailed tax-information statement that shows financial transactions and income-related information reported to the Income Tax Department of India for a taxpayer.

Definition

The Annual Information Statement is an online statement available to taxpayers through the Income Tax e-filing portal.

It provides a broader view of financial information reported against a taxpayer’s PAN, helping the taxpayer review what the Income Tax Department has received from banks, employers, financial institutions, registrars, and other reporting entities.

AIS may include information relating to:

  • Salary and other income
  • Interest earned from bank accounts or deposits
  • Dividend income
  • Purchase or sale of shares, mutual funds, or other securities
  • Certain high-value financial transactions
  • Tax deducted at source (TDS) and tax collected at source (TCS)
  • Income-tax payments and refunds
  • Other information reported to the Income Tax Department

One important feature of AIS is that taxpayers can review reported information and, where the system allows, provide feedback if an entry appears incorrect, duplicated, or does not belong to them.

AIS also works alongside the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), which presents a more condensed summary of relevant information for easier review.

For example, if a taxpayer receives ₹45,000 of bank interest and sells mutual fund units during the financial year, these transactions may appear in the AIS if they have been reported by the relevant financial institutions.

AIS is therefore useful when preparing an Income Tax Return (ITR), but taxpayers should still compare it with their own records rather than relying on it blindly.

Practical Example

Checking Income Before Filing an ITR

Priya works for a private company and also earns interest from two bank fixed deposits.

During the financial year, she earns:

  • ₹8 lakh as salary
  • ₹32,000 as bank interest
  • ₹18,000 as dividend income

Before filing her Income Tax Return, Priya downloads her AIS from the Income Tax e-filing portal.

She notices that her salary, interest, and dividend income have been reported in the statement. She compares these figures with her Form 16, bank statements, and investment records.

She also finds one interest entry that appears to have been reported twice.

Using the AIS feedback facility, she flags the duplicated information and keeps her supporting records.

By reviewing AIS before filing her return, Priya reduces the risk of omitting reported income or creating a mismatch with information already available to the Income Tax Department.

History & Context

Before 2021

Form 26AS Was the Main Tax Information Statement

For many years, Indian taxpayers mainly used Form 26AS to review information such as TDS, TCS, certain tax payments, and other tax-related records linked to their PAN. However, Form 26AS did not provide the same broad view of financial transactions that the later AIS system was designed to offer.
2021

Introduction of the Annual Information Statement

The Income Tax Department introduced the Annual Information Statement on its compliance and e-filing systems to provide taxpayers with a more comprehensive view of financial information reported about them. AIS expanded the range of information visible to taxpayers and introduced a system for reviewing and providing feedback on reported entries.
Today

Important Tool for Income-Tax Filing and Verification

AIS is now an important pre-filing reference for Indian taxpayers. It helps individuals compare their own financial records with information reported to the Income Tax Department and identify possible omissions or mismatches before submitting an Income Tax Return.
