Salary CTC and Your Take-Home Pay

A ₹12 lakh job offer doesn't mean ₹1 lakh will reach your bank account every month.

What the Terms Say

CTC means cost to company. It may include salary, the employer's provident fund (PF) payments, insurance, gratuity costs and performance bonuses. Some are benefits or later payments, rather than monthly cash.

Take-home pay is what remains from that month's cash salary after deductions such as your PF contribution and income tax.

Why It Matters

Two offers with the same CTC can give you different monthly pay. A bonus may depend on performance. Gratuity shown in CTC isn't paid each month, and receiving it depends on the applicable rules.

A Simple Example

Suppose ₹12 lakh CTC includes ₹9.6 lakh fixed cash salary, ₹1.2 lakh performance bonus and ₹1.2 lakh employer contributions and benefits. Regular monthly cash salary is ₹80,000 before your deductions and tax. The bonus is separate.

Check Before You Agree

  • Ask HR for the full breakup and estimated monthly take-home pay.

  • Check bonus conditions, payment dates and whether a joining bonus must be repaid if you leave early.

  • Compare guaranteed cash separately from bonuses and benefits. Check your first payslip against the agreed breakup.

Quick Takeaway

Use take-home pay when planning your monthly budget.
