Misleading Money Claims

Claim: A Higher Deposit Rate Means a Better Deposit

Why the highest interest rate isn't always the best deposit choice.

Claim: A Higher Deposit Rate Means a Better Deposit

Why It Sounds Convincing

If one FD offers 7% and another offers 8.5%, why wouldn't you choose the higher rate? The bigger number naturally gets your attention.

The Missing Context

The higher rate may earn you more interest, but only if you receive it as promised. You also need to know who's taking your money and how safe that institution is. A bank FD and a company deposit may advertise similar rates, yet offer very different protections. A higher interest rate doesn't always mean higher risk, and a lower rate doesn't automatically mean safety. Deposit terms matter too. You may lose some interest if you withdraw early, and tax can reduce what you actually keep. If you might need the money soon, an extra percentage point may not make up for difficult withdrawal conditions.

Check Before You Believe It

Check the institution, applicable deposit insurance, and available information about its financial strength or credit rating. Read the early-withdrawal rules. Compare what you'll receive after tax and charges, not just the rate in the advertisement.

Quick Takeaway

The best deposit isn't always the one with the highest rate.
